Reading and Phonics
We teach reading primarily through phonics and guided reading sessions. In foundation stage and key stage one all children have daily phonics sessions which are delivered in ability groups. Recently we have completely overhauled our phonics provision and now teach using 'Read, Write, Inc' materials and methods. In every class from reception upward a daily guided read or whole class read session is held where children read and discuss with a teacher or undertake focused ‘reading workshop’ activities. In addition to these some children have individual reading with an adult throughout the week to enable them to make accelerated progress. Home reading books can be changed as often as needed by children and parents and the reading diary is completed to record this. The use of the library as a lending resource for home reading is in development.
The scheme we use for phonics is Read Write Inc.
The main reading scheme that we use in KS1 is Oxford Reading Tree with some Read Write Inc. books used as appropriate in addition to phonics sessions.
Oxford reading tree is used for individual readers at earlier stages of reading as well as the Big Cat Collins scheme.
We also use texts produced by 'Catch Up Readers' such as the The Talisman Series to support older children with content and text level appropriate books.
All children have a home reading book from the scheme or a 'free' reader. They should change this as often as possible from the home reading section inside the library.
All children can also borrow books from our library to read at home. These are free choice.
